Guided Tour: Singing in Unison by Brooklyn Rail

900 3rd Ave (Between 34th Street + 3rd Ave) | 11am – 6pm

Brooklyn Rail presents the seventh installment of its ongoing exhibition series, Singing in Unison, at Industry City. Once a postage facility, the gallery space is 16,000 square feet and has been remodeled specifically for this show. This rendition of Singing in Unison expands upon the themes presented in previous installments, and importantly, the unique quality each artist brings to their work is a cause for celebration. It is that uniqueness that enables us to rejoice in what Konrad Wachsmann referred to, in describing the Great Exhibition of 1851, as “the art of joining.” By showcasing the works of artists young and old, taught and self-taught, and hailing from every corner of the world side-by-side, we also participate in the form of creation by fostering a community bound by a mutual appreciation for art in all its many forms.

Join Brooklyn Rail on Saturday, September 24th for guided-tour sessions throughout the day, led by the curation team. The exhibition will continue to run every Wednesday – Sunday through December 17, 2022.

Bill Brand’s Masstransiscope

Court Tree Collective, 51 35th Street (The Makers Guild, Building 5) | 12 – 6pm

Court Tree Collective proudly presents Bill Brand’s limited edition Masstransiscope print portfolio. For the first time ever all 57 prints will be exhibited, corresponding to the iconic 228 animated “frames” of the artwork that can be seen in NYC’s Myrtle Avenue subway.

Bill Brand installed Masstransiscope in the unused Myrtle Avenue subway station in Brooklyn, New York in September 1980 and has been seen by millions of commuters for over forty years. Masstransiscope turns the subway into a movie machine, presenting a colorful, animated “moving picture” to commuters as the train moves through the tunnel. The images are viewed through a series of vertical slits set into a specially constructed housing built on the principle of the Zoetrope, a 19th-century optical toy. Masstransiscope is part of the permanent collection of MTA Arts and Design.

With Bill Brand’s fine art prints Masstransiscope’s images can be enjoyed above ground for their formal and painterly qualities. The prints are carefully executed to evoke the work’s brilliant reflective quality as seen in motion from the train as well as its physical and textural quality when observed as a traditional static image.
Court Tree Collective is an art gallery + shop established by a group of artists and creatives with the primary purpose of representing and supporting the work of emerging and established contemporary artists.
