InContext: Mercado Global’s COVID Pivot
Mercado Global is a nonprofit accessories brand that empowers rural Latin American women to become entrepreneurs. During the pandemic, Mercado, pivoted their business to creating face masks. To date they have made 65,000 masks, of which 55,000 have been donated, shipped free of charge to the epicenters of the virus throughout the U.S. and Latin America – to hospitals and retirement homes, postal workers, housing authority residents, migrant farmworkers in California, Black Lives Matter in Brooklyn, and indigenous communities in Guatemala.
When you purchase a mask handmade by their artisans, you are supporting the production of two masks – one for you and one that they will donate to an essential worker in need.
